The CDC estimates that over 300 children are treated each day at the emergency room for burns. There are the obvious culprits including decorative tiki torches, fire pits and barbecue grills. But there are also other burn dangers that you need to watch out for.
For example, metal objects like seat belts and playground slides can become incredibly hot in the summer.
Keep Them Slathered Up
Children’s skin is especially susceptible to damage from the sun. It is very important that kids wear hats and don’t spend too much time in the sun. And don’t forget to keep them slathered up with sunscreen.
If at all possible, find shade during the hottest part of the day if you are stuck outside.
Stay on High Alert Near Water
The majority of accidents in the water occur right in the back yard. The comfort of your home can give parents a false sense of safety, which leads them to let their guard down. When water is involved, parents need to be extra cautious.
Even the most skilled kid swimmers are vulnerable in the water, so it is important to keep a watchful eye on them at all times.
Watch For Ticks and Mosquitoes
Don’t let ticks and mosquitoes dampen your summer experience. Make sure the insect repellent you use has DEET or another EPA-approved ingredient. And remember to apply sunscreen first and insect repellent last.
Hydration is Key
Summer is the perfect time to help your kids develop healthy hydration habits. Kid’s developing bodies cool less efficiently than adults. And when water is leaving the body as sweat, faster than it can be replaced, there is a risk for dehydration.
You should be giving your kids water breaks twice an hour. You should start the day giving your kids a glass of water and encouraging them to drink water throughout the day.
Take a CPR Class
CPR is a vital skill that all of your family members need to learn. It can save a life when least expected. Choking is the number one cause of unintentional death in infants, so you need to be well prepared.
You and your family can take CPR classes at any time, it doesn’t take that long. You can even use the CPR class as a way to bond with the family.
Wear a Helmet
Whether it’s riding a scooter, biking, skateboarding or rollerblading, make sure the kids are wearing their helmets. It is also important that kids wear the proper helmets when playing football or baseball.

Review the Plans
You should have plans of what to do in the event your kids get separated from you. While cell phones are handy in these types of situations, you cannot completely rely on them.
When you go somewhere, talk about what to do should you get separated. You can have a meeting place and teach them to identify helping people like staff or policemen.
Check the Weather
Before engaging in any outdoor activities with the family, check the weather to ensure safety. Storms can crop up out of nowhere and they can pose a threat if you are not prepared.
Never Let Them Wait in the Car
It only takes 10 minutes for a car to heat up to dangerous levels. Never leave a child in the car alone, not even for a minute or two. It might be only 60 degrees outside, but it can get deadly hot in the car.
