According to the Centers for Disease Control, it is recommended that all children receive vaccines according to the recommended immunization schedule to protect them from certain serious, but preventable diseases. Because children have weaker immune systems and are more susceptible, it is suggested that they receive their immunizations before age 2. This will help to protect them from a total of 14 life-threatening diseases.
Immunizations Aren’t Just For Infants
Although the majority of immunizations occur during the first two years of life, there are additional ones that are recommended for pre-teen children. Around the age of 11 or 12, children should receive the HPV and Meningococcal vaccines. Plus, everyone over the age of six months should receive a flu vaccine, every single year.
Concerns About Immunizations
Some parents have concerns about getting their children immunized. Some of the reasons have to do with side effects, the possibility of a serious reaction, or the feeling that immunizations are not necessary since many of the diseases they are used to prevent hardly exist anymore. If you’re not sure whether or not to get your child immunized, we urge you to consider the risks and then consider that the benefits far outweigh them. If parents stop immunizing their children, we would see epidemics of diseases that are nearly under control today. If you have questions or concerns, please talk with your pediatrician about them, but don’t just make the decision to not get your child vaccinated.
